Gregorio Lazzarini
St. Augustine Trampling Heresy

1694
Location: Church of St. Peter Martyr, Murano
Provenance: Church of Saint Mary of the Angels, Murano

This painting is an outlier among images of St. Augustine, partly for its abandonment of the usual iconography but primarily for its violence. It even outdoes traditional images of vanquished foes, which tend to feature serene figures of saints scarcely aware of the erstwhile tormentors beneath their feet (example).
